Open Source: Remix this iPhone game

April 5, 2010 | 12:38 pm PST | in Design,Puff Puff

When 6th Mega first launched, we told you that 100% of the source code was going to be made freely available to developers. Although we’re developing using the open source cocos2d framework (see below for more of this fantastic resource), we’re also going to donate our code and assets to the community.

Why allow our iPhone game to be remixed?

As part of our mission as a Social Business, we feel that by making our game open source it has the potential to add greater value to the world and community rather than the alternative of making our investment private such that it can only benefit ourselves and our mission. Since we were funded by the community, we want to give back as part of our business model.

Plus — we think it will be fun!

How will it work?

Once we complete the game and launch, we will then make all the source code and assets available for download on this website.

There have been some exciting Open Source Remix projects in the past, such as:

Nine Inch Nails Open Source Remixes

NIN Open Source Remixes represent the best alternative versions of Nine Inch Nails songs mixed by the fans (Trent Reznor provided Multitrack files to the public to do with as they will) and released as The Limitless Potential, a 21 track remix album.

Mashable Remix Design Contest

Mashable partnered with 99designs, a venue for “crowdsourced” designs, to host the Remix Mashable Design Contest, giving you free reign to Mash, mix and remake our logo and tagline into anything you please.

(Got any others you think we should include?)

Here’s a nice crash course on Remix Theory.

And now a bit about cocos2d for iPhone - our game would not be possible without…

cocos2d for iPhone is a FREE framework for building 2D games, demos, and other graphical/interactive applications. It is based on the cocos2d design: it uses the same concepts, but instead of using python it uses objective-c.

cocos2d for iPhone is open source (definition), which means there is no fee to use the framework, thus reducing the cost to develop 2D games for the iPhone significantly. The framework supports a lot of features and has an active, big and friendly community (forumIRC).

cocos2d for iPhone supports: iPod TouchiPhone and iPad. Here is a video of some of the cocos2D for iPhone features:

AppStore approved: More than 550 AppStore games already use it, including many best seller games. Checkout announcements of new cocos2d games.

Hi 6th Mega Team,

I was wondering could I modify some source code and change the images, music, App name etc and come out a similar style game and sell on App store? Would it be okay to continue use the existing sound effects and some graphic images? I will also donate 10% of the earning of my new App to charity. Thank you 6th Mega Team for releasing such a wonderful open source App for developers.

Best regards,
Paul
